1. Tell us how you started collecting all the
se songs in the beginning.
As former elementary music teachers with young ch
ildren of our own, we realized that we wanted to sh
are children's songs with our own kids, but we had
a hard time remembering all the words and melodies
to many well-known, traditional songs. At that time
(almost 30 years ago), we couldn't find collections
of traditional children's songs in stores, so we start
ed collecting our own. We did this by asking grandp
arents, teachers, other moms, and friends what son
gs they remembered from childhood. We also did re
search at the library to make sure we had a wide
variety of the most familiar children's songs.
2. When was the first song video tape made
and how old are the children in that video
clip now?
The first “Wee Sing” video (Wee Sing Together) was
produced in 1984. The children in that video are now
around 30 years old.
3. Tell us how you feel about the newly revi
sed Wee Sing DVD is about to launch in Kor
ea soon.
We are very excited about the “Wee Sing” DVDs lau
nching in Korea. Music is such a universal langua
ge and we know that through music and song, lear
ning the English language for Korean children will
be much easier.
4. Tell us your own, unique way of using
'Wee Sing' songs to your students.
When we sing “Wee Sing” songs with children, we
like to become like children ourselves by singing
and doing the motions right along with the kids. The
children learn more easily by following along with
the teacher.
5. Why do you feel so strong about the nee
ds of 'Wee Sing' songs to the children in E
FL situation?
Music is a wonderful educational tool. Not only are
children singing and having fun, but also they are
learning vocabulary and concepts that are being rei
nforced by melody, rhythm, repetition and movement.
The songs included in much of the “Wee Sing” coll
ection are songs that been sung by children around
the world for many generations. These songs have
catchy tunes and lots of repetition, which help mem
orization.
6. Tell us how the children and their parents
could use 'Wee Sing' songs in the most effe
ctive ways in their daily lives.
Children respond to music in a positive way, so it’s
nice to sing with them whenever possible. Singing
a little song while changing diapers, taking a walk,
or riding in the car helps keep a child’s attention. A
parent can also just have fun with their kids by joini
ng them in songs such as “Ring Around the Rosy”
or “Head and Shoulders.” Clapping songs and fing
erplays are also fun to share together. Lullabies
and quiet songs before bedtime help to calm childr
en as well as create a special together time with
parents or grandparents. As parents become more
familiar with songs, they will feel more comfortable
singing along with their children. A special bond is
created through sharing music.
7. What is your favorite song in the 'Wee Si
ng' song?
With such a huge collection of songs, it is hard to
name a favorite. We have many favorites.
8. Was there any memorable moment or unfo
rgettable incident of collecting songs?
It was very special to talk to older people about their
favorite childhood songs. It was as if they were re-
living their childhood. It was amazing how well ma
ny of them could remember the words, melodies,
and motions to their favorite songs. It was also very
interesting to realize how many different versions of
a specific song we came across. We learned that
as songs were passed down from generation to ge
neration, the same basic song could be remember
ed many different ways. We ended up choosing the
version that was most familiar to our own memories.
9. Tell us the characteristics of nine titles
and why they are all needed to the children.
Each of the nine titles has its own story, which is
enhanced and driven along by music, song, and da
nce. The stories are situations to which young chil
dren can relate. Each story has a moral lesson and
also includes many specific learning situations su
ch as counting, learning the alphabet, coordination
skills, colors, animals, foods, transportation, music
al concepts, vocabulary, etc. The DVDs are interac
tive and encourage children to get up and sing and
dance along with the characters. Children learn mo
re quickly this way and they have such fun as they
become involved.
We strongly believe that music is a valuable educat
ional tool that makes learning easier and more enjo
yable.
10. What does the 'Wee Sing' mean?
In English, the word “wee” means small or little. Th
erefore, “Wee Sing” means songs for young children.

1. 이 노래들을 모으기 시작하게 된 계기를 말씀해
주십시오.
자녀를 키우며 초등학교 교사로 재직하면서 어린이 노래
(동요)를 우리 아이들과 공유하고 함께 불러보고 싶다는
생각을 아주 많이 해 왔습니다. 그러나 잘 알려진 전래
동요의 가사와 멜로디를 일일이 다 기억하는 것은 참으로
어려운 일이었습니다.
그러던 중 (아마도 한 30년 전쯤 인 것 같습니다) 동화에
나온 전래 동요 모음집을 찾을 수 없다는 것을 깨닫고 우
리는 우리가 직접 모으기로 마음 먹었습니다. 노래 수집
은 자신들의 어린 시절에 불렀던 노래들을 기억하고 있는
할아버지, 할머니, 선생님들과 어머니 및 친구들을 통해
이루어졌습니다. 또한 더 친근하고 다양한 노래들을 많이
모으기 위해 도서관에서 많은 리서치도 했습니다.
2. 이 비디오 테이프를 처음 만든 때가 언제이며,
비디오에 참여한 아이들은 지금 몇 살쯤 되었나요?
첫 번째 Wee Sing Video는 ‘Wee Sing Together’라 불리
며 1984년에 제작되었습니다. 비디오 제작에 참여했던
아이들은 지금쯤 아마 30대가 되었을 것입니다.
3. 한국에서 위씽이 DVD로 출시 된다는 소식을 들
은 후 어떤 기분이 들었나요?
한국에서 Wee Sing DVD가 런칭 한다는 소식은 매우 기
쁘고 떨리는 소식이었습니다. 음악은 만국 공통어이기에
음악과 노래를 통해 한국 아이들이 영어를 좀 더 쉽게 배
우고 접할 수 있으리라 확신합니다.
4. 위씽 노래를 아이들에게 활용하는 자신만의 특
별한 방법이 있다면 알려 주세요.
우리가 Wee Sing 노래를 아이들과 함께 부를 때면 동심
으로 돌아가 노래와 율동을 아이들과 함께 즐기게 됩니
다. 아이들은 선생님과 허물없이 함께 할 때 더 마음을
열고 쉽게 배울 수 있습니다.
5. 영어가 제2외국어인 현실의 아이들에게 위씽 노
래의 필요성을 말해 주십시오.
음악은 정말 유용한 교구입니다. 아이들은 노래를 부르며
즐기는 동시에 멜로디, 리듬을 익히고, 반복, 동작을 통해
어휘와 개념을 익히게 됩니다. Wee Sing 에 포함된 노래
들은 오랜 세대를 거쳐 세계 각국의 아이들이 불러온 노

간 차로 이동할 때, 지루하지 않게 하기 위해서든 언제,
어디에서라도 상관없습니다. 부모는 그저 ‘Ring Around
the Rosy’나 ‘head and Shoulders’를 함께 부르며 즐기
기만 하면 됩니다. 노래를 하며 박수를 치거나 손동작을
함께 하면 더욱 재미있을 것입니다. 잠자리에서 불러주는
자장가나 조용한 노래들은 아이들을 정서적으로 안정시
켜주는 동시에 가족과의 특별한 관계 형성에도 도움을

워낙 방대한 양의 노래 모음집이라 꼭 하나를 고르기 너
무 어렵습니다. 좋아하는 곡이 너무 많습니다.
8. 위씽 노래들을 수집하면서 기억에 남는 순간이
나 잊을 수 없는 추억이 있습니까?
나이 드신 분들과 그분들의 어린 시절 추억의 노래를 떠
올리며 이야기하던 일이 생각납니다. 그분들의 표정은
꼭 다시 그 시절로 돌아간 듯 보였습니다. 어떻게 그렇게
많은 분들이 노랫말, 멜로디, 율동, 노래들을 다 기억하고
계신지 놀라울 뿐이었습니다. 또한 어떻게 같은 노래가
여러 가지 다른 형태로 불리워졌는지 알아가는 것도 흥
미로웠습니다. 세대를 거쳐 구전되면서 같은 노래가 여러
가지 다양한 형태로 기억되고 전해진 듯 합니다. 그래서
우리는 우리 기억에 가장 익숙한 형태를 골랐습니다.
9. 9개의 위씽 타이틀의 대한 특징과 왜 아이들에게
모두 필요한지 말씀해주세요.
9개의 위씽 DVD 타이틀은 모두 음악, 노래, 춤을 포함한
각각의 이야기가 수록되어 있습니다. 각각의 이야기들은
아이들이 쉽게 접할 수 있는 주변 상황들을 소재로 합니
다. 그러한 이야기는 교훈을 줄 뿐만 아니라 수 개념, 알
파벳 익히기, 조합, 색깔, 동물, 음식, 교통, 음악의 개념,
어휘 등의 주제를 담고 있습니다. 비디오는 아이들이 주
인공과 함께 일어나 노래하고 춤추며 즐길 수 있도록 구

10. ‘Wee Sing’은 무슨 의미인가요?
영어에서 ‘wee’는 ‘작은’이라는 뜻입니다. 그래서 ‘Wee
Sing’은 ‘어린아이를 위한 노래’라 이해하면 되겠습니다.
