털 인형처럼 생긴 jumbaroo가 배가 아픕니다. 너무나 아픈 그는 간호사를 부르고 진찰을 받게 되지요. 그런데 이게 어쩐 일인가요? 배에 파란 점이 나는 전염병이었어요. jumbaroo는 어떻게 되었을까요? 책 페이지마다 나오는 nonsense words가 다양합니다. 우리말 뜻에 초점을 두지 말고, 단어를 읽어내는 연습에 초점을 두어 읽어 봅니다. 엄마가 한 단어를 읽고 뒤따라 아이가 한 단어씩 읽으면 그 리듬감에 더욱 흥미롭습니다. 읽기를 위한 책이 가져야 할 몇 가지 특징이 있습니다. 첫째, 아이들에게 ‘재미’를 주어 읽고 싶은 책일 것 둘째, 읽기에 부담이 없도록 얇은 책일 것 셋째, 철저하게 읽기를 위해 만들어질 것 바로 Joy Cowly 시리즈가 모두 갖추고 있는 특징들 입니다. 작가 자신이 slow reader였던 경험으로 인해서 Joy Cowly는 읽기 프로그램을 위한 동화책과 수많은 교수용 matirials을 만들었습니다. 그래서 영어가 모국어인 나라는 물론, Second Language로 영어를 사용하는 많은 나라들에서 그녀의 책을 빠짐없이 발견하게 됩니다. 이렇게 읽기를 위한 여러 장점을 갖춘 Joy Cowly의 책을 드디어 우리나라에서도 시리즈로 만나볼 수 있게 되었습니다. 18권의 책 속에서 아이들의 읽기 능력 향상을 위한 작가의 남다른 노력을 발견하게 되실 겁니다. 책을 읽을 때에 하는 여러 activity 중에서 우리가 익히 알고 있는 before reading, while reading, after reading activities가 왜 꼭 필요한지 아십니까? 책을 제대로 이해(reading comprehension)하며 읽는 활동에 결정적인 역할을 하기 때문입니다. 그 중, before reading activity는 앞으로 읽을 책의 내용을 아이가 상상해보도록 함으로써 책의 내용을 집중해서 읽게 되는 역할을 합니다. after reading activity는 책을 읽고 나서 그 책의 내용을 얼만큼 이해했는지 다시 한 번 기억을 되돌려 연상하여 이해하는데 목적이 있습니다. 자, 그럼 특별한 오디오 구성에 대하여 이야기해 볼까요? 오디오의 구성은 이렇게 되어 있습니다. 1. before reading 활동을 위한 cover page 소개 ‘The Jumbaroo’에서는 책의 주인공인 Jumbaroo가 직접 책소개를 함으로써 한층 흥미롭습니다. 그 외의 책에서는 또 다른 다양한 방법으로 소개를 하고 있습니다. 2. Well, look at the cover of your book and I’ll introduce myself. I’m the Jumbaroo and that’s me on the cover of your book with my two young friends. Do you know what they are doing to me? They’re loving me. And for a very good reason too, which you will find out about when you read the story. By the way, the name of our story for today is “The Jumbaroo”. That’s right! It’s named after me. Anyway girls and boys, it’s a fun story and I want you to follow along with our storyteller. We will begin at the cover of our book, looking at all the pictures and generally having a good time. To help you follow along, I want you to turn the page every time you hear this sound. ‘Diling doong’ Now, make sure you are at the cover of the book and let’s get started. 트랙 3 * Narrator reads the story. (본책 내용) 트랙 4 [music] Well. I feel much better girls and boys, thank you. And now you understand why my two young friends were loving me so much. They were worried about me. Have you ever eaten something that has given you a tummy ache? Well, if you haven’t, I can tell you it’s NO fun. And being a jumbaroo, I get blue spots on my tummy when I feel ill. Does that happen to you? Probably not. Well, enough about that boys and girls. We’re going to read the story one more time. This time some actors are going to perform the story for us. I want you to follow along with them and this time, I want you to read as many of the words as you can. This will help you when we do a special activity after you come back. We’ll begin the story this time from the title page. That’s the page, just inside of the front cover. Turn there now. You’ll see a picture of me eating some delicious apples. Oh~ Those are what made me sick. Anyway, we’ll begin from here. Remember to turn the page whenever you here this sound. [Diling doong] Read as many of the words from our story as you can. Because I’m going to give you a very special task to do. Boys and girls, did you notice the funny words in our story? Do you remember words like woggly, and flu-flam and bleezles? They are funny sounding words, aren’t they? We call them non-sense words. Because they really don’t mean anything but they sound funny and are fun to say. Oh, I suppose you can give those words a meaning if you wanted, but really they’re just fun to say. So what I want you to do is to say those words whenever they come up in the story. Turn to page 7 in your book and I’ll show you what I mean. Okay. On page 7, you will see a series of our funny words. When you see them, I want you to say them, right along with our storyteller. Just like this. “Bleezles, bleezles, flu-flam, flu-flam, woggly, woggly jumbaroo.” These types of word show up throughout the book. In fact you will see them on pages 2,4,7,9,11,13 and 16. (sound of a whistle) Woggly, woggly jumbaroo. (sound of a whistle) The pain got worse. He called for the nurse. I think I have the flu-flam (sound of a whistle) Flu-flam, flu-flam, woggly, woggly jumbaroo. jumbaroo. (sound of a whistle) Then his woggly got some dark blue spots, and the nurse said, it’s the bleezles (sound of a whistle) Bleezles, bleezles, flu-flam, flu-flam, woggly, woggly jumbaroo. jumbaroo. (sound of a whistle) I do feel blue, said the jumbaroo. By morning I’ll be drodbeat. (sound of a whistle) Drodbeat, drodbeat, bleezles , bleezles, flu-flam, flu-flam, woggly, woggly jumbaroo. jumbaroo. (sound of a whistle) Lift up your head, the good nurse said, and I’ll give you some slushus. (sound of a whistle) Slushus, slushus, drodbeat, drodbeat, bleezles , bleezles, flu-flam, flu-flam, woggly, woggly jumbaroo. jumbaroo. (sound of a whistle) The jumbaroo said, Hey! (sound of a whistle I 2) The pain has gone away! And the dark blue spots are vanshoo! (sound of a whistle) Vanshoo, vanshoo, slushus, slushus, drodbeat, drodbeat, bleezles , bleezles, flu-flam, flu-flam, woggly, woggly jumbaroo. Jumnbaroo. (sound of a whistle) Now if you, too (like the jumbaroo), have dark blue spots on your woggly, (sound of a whistle) take a luscious dose of slushus, and you’ll be right as a goggly. (sound of a whistle) Goggly, goggly, vanshoo, vanshoo, slushus, slushus, drodbeat, drodbeat, bleezles , bleezles, flu-flam, flu-flam, woggly, woggly jumbaroo! jumbaroo ! Hey!
