The Scrubbing Machine

Story by Joy Cowley

Boy, does that sparkle? The sink is gleaming white! That¡¯s right boys and girls. I¡¯m cleaning my house. In fact, I can clean as good as anyone. Though I have to admit there are times that I wish I had a machine that would do all of the housework. Oh, sure there are vacuum cleaners and dishwashers and a whole list of other machines to help with housework. No. What I¡¯m talking about is a machine that will take care of all the chores. A sort of all-purpose machine. You know, Mrs.Wishy-Washy has a machine, just like that and I¡¯ll bet it¡¯s wonderful. Let me set down my bucket and get ready for today¡¯s story. It¡¯s called ¡®The Scrubbing Machine¡¯. In a moment, our storyteller will begin from the cover of your book. If you¡¯ll turn the page each time you hear this sound, [Diling doong], you¡¯ll be able to follow along and learn all about the scrubbing machine. All right. From the cover, let¡¯s get started.

Æ®·¢ 4

Well, gee~ I had no idea machine could clean like that. Why, I can be done with all of my work in no time. I just don¡¯t understand why Mrs.Wishy-Washy wanted to take the scrubbing machine back to the shop. Do y know why, boys and girls? Maybe if we read the story again together one more time, I¡¯ll be able to understand. During this read, we¡¯ll use music and sound effects and I want you to read right along with our storyteller. We¡¯ll begin this time, from the title page of your book. That¡¯s the page just inside of the front cover. As you¡¯re reading along, listen for this sound. [Diling doong]. It¡¯s your signal to turn the page. Remember, read as many of the words on each page as you can and I¡¯ll have something special for you to do when you get back. Okay! Let¡¯s begin.

Now let¡¯s take a break from reading and cleaning and listen to a song!

Whoo~ There. Another room cleaned and ready for company. Oh, and you¡¯re back already. Good job girls and boys! Did you figure out why Mrs.Wishy-Washy took the scrubbing machine back to the shop? Must have been too much of a good thing. Anyhow, I said I would have something for you to do and so I have. You¡¯re going to read the story and fill in the missing words. Sounds like fun, don¡¯t you think? Good. Turn to page 2 in your book and I¡¯ll show you how it will work. All right. On page 2, the narrator will say :

¡®Mrs.Wishy-Washy got a scrubbing machine to scrub her house and make it _______¡¯

You¡¯ll fill in the word, clean. Fun, right? That¡¯s great. There will be words to fill in on every page. Now, turn back to the title page and we¡¯ll begin!
