Track 2 - A Reading of the Story with Turn-the-page Signals

Musical Intro
Lookie, lookie, lookie,
We're doing The Mouse Cookie.
Lookie, lookie, lookie,
We're doing The Mouse Cookie.
Lookie, lookie, lookie,
We're doing The Mouse Cookie.
Hi, I'm Carol Kane. A little later we'll learn a dance called The Mouse Cookie. But first, I'm going to read you the book, If you Give A Mouse A Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff, with illustrations by Felicia Bond. Every time you hear this sound (cat) no, wait, that's not right. Every time you hear this sound (dog). Oops, that's definitely not it. Every time you hear this sound (turn-page signal). Ahh, that's more like it, you know its time to turn the page. Now, find the page with the picture of the boy holding out the cookie to the little mouse. Got it? Let's begin.

Text Read by Carol Kane

Track 3, 9 Fill-in-the-Blanks Game

I'll bet some of you have heard this book before. Maybe you even heard the author read the book. She visits a lot of schools and libraries. Sometimes she plays a game when she reads the book. It's a fill-in-the-blanks game. I'll show you how to play. If you give a mouse a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of___ (that's when you're supposed to say milk) to go with it. See, I leave out one word, and you fill in the blank when you hear the (bell sound). Ready? You already know the first one.

Fill-in-the-Blanks Game

Did you fill-in some of the blanks? Good for you! If you missed a few, that's alright. If you want to, you can try again later.

Track 4, 10 - About the Author, Laura Joffe Numeroff

About the Author, Laura Joffe Numeroff
Laura Joffe Numeroff, who wrote If You Give A Mouse A Cookie says her motto is: never give up. She was turned down nine times before she found someone to publish her book. She got the idea for the book when she was taking a long trip in her car. As she drove along she thought about it and thought about it and when she finally got home, she wrote it all down. She says she started writing as soon as she learned to read, but she's had some other interesting jobs too, like running a merry-go-round, and being a private investigator. She's written twelve books so far, and she plans to write many more. She loves to visit classrooms and libraries where she can read the book out loud. Sometimes she slips in a wrong word here and there, like: if you give a mouse a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of¡¦lemonade. (sound effects). You know which word is wrong, don't you?

Track 5, 11 - Wrong Words Song

Listen to this song and see if you can tell which words are wrong.

"Wrong Words" song
If you give a mouse a cookie, give a mouse a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of lemonade. No, he's going to ask for a glass of milk. Right.
Then he's going to want a straw, and he's going to need a napkin to wipe off his milk mosquito. No, to wipe off his milk mustache. Right.
He'll look in the mirror, and see he needs a trim, so you'll get a little pair of mittens for him. No, you'll get a little pair of scissors for him. Right.
It's going to make a mess, which he'll clean up more or less, he'll be tired and he'll want to take a bus. No, he'll be tired and he'll want to take a nap. Right.
So you'll fix up a box with a blanket and a fox. No, a blanket and a pillow. Right.
And he'll climb right in, he'll fluff up the chicken. No, he'll fluff up the pizza. No, he'll fluff up the pillow. Right.
And he'll say to you, please won't you read me the menu. No, please won't you read me a story. Right.
So you'll read to him, from one of your books, and he'll ask to see the pictures. But when he looks at the pictures, he'll want to draw one of his own, so he'll ask for some toothpaste. No, he'll ask for some paper. Right.
And a box of crayons, and he'll draw a picture. When the picture's done, he'll sign his little name, and he'll want to hang it on your doghouse. No, your refrigerator. Right.
When he sees your refrigerator, he's going to feel thirsty, and he'll ask for a glass of juice. No, water. No, seltzer with a twist of lime. No, milk. Right.
Chances are, when he gets that glass of milk, he's going to want a cookie to go with it, going to want a cookie to go with it, going to want a cookie to go with it.

Track 6, 12 - About the illustrator, Felicia Bond

Do you remember the picture that our friend the mouse drew and hung on the boy's refrigerator? That mouse is a very good artist. So is Felicia Bond. She drew all the pictures in the book. She says that it takes about six months, that's half a year, to illustrate a picture book. She does hundreds of sketches before she's ready to do the final drawings. That's when she uses the good paper. She had to make a lot of important decisions about the drawings in this book, like what kind of cookie the mouse should be eating. She almost made it an Oreo. She likes to do her artwork in a sunny room in her house, while she listens to music. Every now and then, she puts down her paintbrush, and pets her cat, Otis, who sleeps on the table next to her while she works. In her free time, she likes to swim and cook and read. I love to read too, don't you?

Track 7, 13 - The Mouse Cookie Song

Have you ever found that some books make you feel like crying, because the ending is just so sad? And some books make you feel like laughing because they're just so funny? Well, for some reason this book makes me feel like dancing. It makes me want to tap my feet. Can you do that? And wiggle my nose. Don't be afraid to look silly. It makes me want to get up and dance on my toes. Can you do that too? Well, if you can do all those things, you shouldn't have any trouble at all doing The Mouse Cookie.

"The Mouse Cookie" song
Can you feel the beat?
Can you tap your feet?
Can you clap, clap?
Can your knees slap?
Can you wiggle your nose while you dance on your toes? Do The Mouse Cookie.

Hi, I'm Carol Kane. A little later we'll learn a dance called The Mouse Cookie. But first, I'm going to read you the book, If you Give A Mouse A Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff, with illustrations by Felicia Bond. If you want to follow along in your own copy of the book, turn to the page where there's a picture of the boy holding out a cookie to the little mouse. Are you ready?

At the end of the Track 13

Well, I hope you've enjoyed If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. By the way, have you read If You Give a Moose a Muffin? It's really funny, too. If you give a moose a muffin, what will they think of next? I can't wait to find out. In the meantime, maybe I can come up with one. Hmmm. Hey, how about: if you give a yak a yo-yo? That's pretty good, don't you think? Maybe you can think of one, too. Until next time, this is Carol Kane saying.
