This is a tale of tiny snail,
And a great big, grey-blue humpback whale.
This is a rock as black as soot,
And this is a snail with an itchy foot.
The sea snail slithered all over the rock,
And gazed at the sea and the ships in the dock.
And as she gazed she sniffed and sighed.
"The sea is deep and the world is wide!
How I long to sail!" Said the tiny snail.
Pre-Reading (읽기 전)
C : Mommy, look at all the stars. Compared to the whole Earth, we're so small.(엄마, 수많은 별들 좀 보세요. 거대한 자연 속에 우리 인간은 정말 작고 하찮은 존재 같아요.)
M : We may be small, but I think we can still do things for the Earth. What do you think?(글쎄, 엄마는 우리 인간이 작은 존재라고 해도 우리가 지구를 위해 할 수 있는 일이 있을 거라고 생각하는데. 네 생각은 어때?)
C : Maybe there are little things we can do.(우리가 할 수 있는 일이라곤 아주 작은 일이겠지요.)
M : Well, let me read you an fun story, then let's think about it some more after that.(그럼 엄마가 재미있는 책을 읽어 줄테니 다시 한 번 생각해보자.)
During Reading (읽으면서)
M : This is a tale about a tiny snail and a big humpback whale. The sea snail longed to sail around the big, wide world.(이 이야기는 아주 작은 바다 달팽이와 향유고래의 이야기란다. 달팽이는 넓은 세상으로 가기를 원했지.)
C : (Turning the page) Mommy, look, the snail got on the whale's tail. I guess they're going sailing together. That looks fun, doesn't it?((다음장을 넘기며) 엄마, 보세요. 고래 꼬리에 달팽이가 올라탔어요. 아마도 같이 여행을 할 건가 봐요. 신나겠다. 그렇죠?)
M : It does. But the snail thinks he is too small, just like you do.(그렇구나. 그런데 달팽이도 너처럼 자기가 너무 하찮은 존재라고 생각하는구나.)
C : Oh no! The whale got lost and it's stuck on land. He looks too big to move. Run, snail! You have to save the whale!(큰일났어요. 큰 고래가 길을 잃어 바닷가 육지로 올라왔는데 너무 커서 움직일 수 없나 봐요. 달팽이야. 얼른 달려. 고래를 구해야 돼.)
M : The snail goes to a school and writes "Save the Whale" on the board.(달팽이는 학교에 가서 칠판에 고래를 구해 달라는 글을 남기고 있구나.)
C : Whew, that's good. Will the children help the whale? What happens next?(휴. 다행이다. 아이들이 고래를 구해줄까요? 다음엔 어떤 일이 일어나요?)
M : The children and the fire fighters help the whale get back safely to the sea. And the sea snails are sitting on the whale's tail, singing, and they all begin sailing again.(아이들 소방관아저씨들 모두 힘을 합쳐 고래를 안전하게 바다로 보내는구나. 그러곤 친구 달팽이들까지 꼬리에 앉아 노래를 부르며 다시 항해를 하고.)
C : Even though it's small, the snail saved the whale. That's great.(달팽이는 비록 작고 느리지만 고래를 살렸어요. 대단해요.)
After-Reading (읽은 후)
M : So honey, after reading this book, what do you think?(얘야. 이 책을 읽고 무엇을 느꼈는지 말할 수 있겠니?)
C : Well, even though I'm small, I think there are things I can do for other people and the Earth.(비록 작은 힘이지만 나도 우리 지구를 위해, 다른 사람을 위해 할 수 있는 일이 있을 거라는 생각을 하게 되었어요.)
M : Like what, for example?(예를 든다면 어떤 일이 있을까?)
C : Well, like keeping the world clean, by recycling paper and plastic, and not littering.(쓰레기를 함부로 버리지 않고 재활용을 해서 깨끗한 환경을 만드는 거예요.)
Reflection (돌아보기)
Julia Donaldson(2003)의 'The Snail and the Whale'은 친근한 그림과 실타래처럼 조직된 라임 구성으로 본문처럼 비교적 높은 수준의 아동을 대상으로 한 토론이 가능한 책입니다. 혹은 저학년을 대상으로 snail/whale, soot/foot, rock/dock처럼 운율(Rhyme)을 강조해 언어의 소리를 가지고 놀 수도 있습니다. 이같이 라임과 리듬을 반복하며 놀이를 장려하는 책은 균형적 리터러시 교수법에 효과적입니다. 아이들이 문맥 속에서 단어를 보고 들으며 언어 구조의 학습을 병행할 수 있기 때문입니다. 영어동화책이 어린이 영어교육에 효과적이고 균형적인 프로그램을 구성하는 필수요건인 것은 분명합니다.
하지만 모든 동화책들이 모든 아이들에게 다 좋은 것은 아닙니다. 각각의 아이들은 리터러시 연속선상의 서로 다른 어느 단계에 와 있습니다. 그래서 아이들이 현재 알고 있는 지식(Prior Knowledge)과 할 수 있는 것(Doable)에 초점을 맞추어 그곳에서 리터러시 접근을 시작하는 것이 무엇보다 중요합니다.
