Television : The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Summary & Main Point 

제 13장에서는 TV가 책 읽기에 미치는 좋은 영향과 나쁜 영향에 대하여 언급하고 있으며, 그 나쁜 영향으로부터 아이들을 지켜낼 부모의 역할에 대하여 기술하고 있다

.

우선, Mem Fox가 말하는 TV의 장단점은 다음과 같다.

The good  things  from TV

1. the pleasure, the excitement

2. the relaxation

3. the satisfaction

4. the experiences

5. the working of brain

6. the growth in general knowledge

특히 TV를 통해 미지의 세계에 대해 알아가고, 다양한 경험을 통해 아이들의 시각을 넓힘으로써 중요한 통찰력을 갖게 되는데, 이는 책을 막 읽기 시작하는 단계에 있어서 아주 큰 도움이 된다.

The bad  things  from TV

1. It seriously harms kid’s ability to concentrate.

2. It dulls kid’s brains.

3. It set up dangerous expectations of school that won’t be met.

텔레비전시청이 본질적으로 나쁜 것은 아니다. 아예 안보여 줄 수도 없고,그렇다고 허용하자니 아이들은 금방 텔레비젼의 재미에 푹 빠져들어 책 읽기를 멀리한다.

현명한 부모라면, TV에 대한 조바심으로 고민하기보다는 책 읽는 것이 TV보는 것 만큼 재미있고 매력적인 일이라고 느낄 수 있도록 해줘야 한다.

구체적으로 어떻게 해야 할까?

1. 책을 읽을 수 있는 환경을 만들어 줘야 한다.

집안곳곳에 놓여있는 책들,밝은 조명,푹신한 소파,편안하고 조용한 장소 등

2. 책 읽기에 대한 스트레스를 주지 말아야 한다.

3. 훌륭한 작가의 재미있고,감동적인 스토리의 책을 부모가 꾸준히 읽어줘야 한다.

Keypoint

Rather than indulging in nail-biting anxiety about TV, we might do better to

focus on what we can do about reading in order to make it as attractive as

television.
