What are the characteristics of a good English teacher?

English is very important but not easy for foreigners to learn, so English teachers should encourage their students to keep studying without giving up. Furthermore, English teachers should try to create a friendly atmosphere in their classes for students to study happily, especially for young children. Teachers have to make an effort to make their lessons more interesting. For that reason, the teachers have to have various ideas and an open-hearted attitude for efficient teaching.

In my opinion, the most important characteristics of a good English teacher are the linguistic knowledge of English, the originality to construct lessons and the application to understand their students.

I was an English teacher of very young children in Korea. Usually my students’ ages were 2 or 3 years old. I taught English to them with storybooks and nursery rhymes. Sometimes we played out some small stories, for example, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Jack and Jill’. Whenever I prepared my lesson, I felt the lack of information about efficient teaching for young children. To teach young children needs careful consideration because they cannot concentrate on lessons for a long time. Their teacher cannot help but find new methods to keep them keen on learning.

For that reason, I really wanted to exchange ideas with other teachers. Through this course, I want to improve not only my English skill but also meet many other teachers who have the same interests in my field.

Next year, I will enter university to study child care because I want to a teacher who can teach young children essential subjects in English. So, after graduating, I want to promote a teacher training center for teaching English to young children in Korea. These days the demands of English education for young children is increasing but the supply of experienced teachers cannot meet the demand. I am confident that it will be a great challenge in my life and I will struggle to gain my goal as hard as I can.
