미국 초등 스쿨북의 대명사로 불리는 Evan-Moor에서 한국 아이들을 위한 Reading 교재가 출시되었습니다. Developing Reading Skills!
정말 반가운 일이 아닐 수 없네요.
기존의 Reading 교재 시리즈는 Kinder에서 Grade 1으로 올라갈때 Gap이 좀 큰 편이어서 아이들에게 다소 힘들겠다는 생각이 적지 않았습니다.
이번 DRS의 교재 내용을 살펴보니 EFL상황의 우리아이들에겐 딱~이다 싶습니다.
기존의 스쿨북의 여러 worksheet에서는 말하기가 해결되지 않은 Emergent Beginner들에게 지나치다 싶게 많은 이야기를 해야하게 하는 부담이 있었습니다만....
DRS에서는 아래 단계에서는 자연스럽게 Phonological Awareness를 통해 contents words를 익힐 수 있고, 제시된 High Fre Qeuncy Words까지 익힐 수 있습니다.
각 챕터안의 Short Story는 반복되는 유용한 Sentence Pattern에 Stroy Structure를 포함하고 있어서 아이들에게 Comprehension 능력을 키워주기에도 아주 좋은 교재입니다.
각 단계별 난이도 차이도 지나침이 없어서, A단계에서 J단계까지 꾸준히 스텝을 밟아주면 Reading뿐만 아니라 Writing, Listening, Speaking도 충분히 해결해 줄 수 있으리라 확신이 드네요.
Go Facts 수업을 막 시작한 예비초등, 초등저학년 아이들과 함께 수업 들어갔습니다.
시간내내 흥미로운 시선으로 즐거워 하던 수업에 함께 하시지요.
* Before Reading
1)Title과 연관된 이야기 나누기를 해보았습니다. : Time to + verb. : ~할 시간이다.
Time to go.
Time to eat.
Time to play.
Time to go to bed.
Time to take a shower.

2) Contents Words 익히기
Picture - Word (Phonemic Awareness) - Writing(Configuration)
본 챕터의 main contents words는 dad, hat, coat입니다.
먼저 picture를 제시하면서 각 단어에 대해 이야기 해봅니다.
(Definition : from The Seseme Street Dictionary)
Dad : A dad is a man who has a child.
Hat : A hat is something that you wear on your head.
coat : A coat is a piece of clothing.
You wear a coat over your other clothes.
T : Look at this picture. (그림을 봅시다.)
Do you know who he is? (이사람이 누군지 알겠어요?)
He is a member of family. (가족 구성원중 한명입니다.)
S : Dad. (아빠요.)
T : That's right. He is dad. (맞았어요. 이사람은 아빠예요.)
Then, what's this? (그럼, 이건 뭘까요?)
S : A hat. (모자요.)
T : Right! This is a hat. When you go out side in winter, you can put it on.
(맞아요. 이건 모자예요. 겨울에 밖에 나갈때, 이걸 쓸 수 있죠.)
(wear대신 Story 안의 단어(put on)를 이용하여 이야기 하도록 합니다.)
You can also put on a coat. (또한 코트도 입을 수 있어요.
I'm going to put a card for the coat on the board. (코트 그림을 붙일께요.)
picture로 각 어휘를 알아본뒤 word와 매치시켜봅니다.
CVC 형태의 단어들만 있어서 아이들이 쉽게 letter를 찾아냈습니다.
T : Now, I'm going to tell you a word.
(이제, 선생님이 단어를 말해줄께요. 들어보세요.)
Listen. Dad. /d/ /a/ /d/
Can you hear the beginning sound of this word?
( 이 단어의 첫소리를 들었나요?)
S : /d/
T : Good. Come up the front and put the correct letter on the board.
(좋아요. 앞으로 나와서 보드에 정확한 글자를 써보세요.)
Then, /d/ /a/ /d/..... this time, can you hear the ending sound?
(이번에는 마지막 소리를 들었나요?)
S : /d/
T : How about middle sound? Can you hear? (중간소리는? 들었나요?)
S : /a/
T : Which letter makes sound /a/? (어떤 글자가 /a/ 소리를 내나요?)
S : a.
T : We've figured it out to make a word. (우리가 단어를 써냈어요.)
Let's write down the word in the box. (이제 박스안에 단어를 써봅시다.)
The letter 'd' is high letter and 'a' is middle letter.
 
3) Sight Words 익히기
Sight words는 Fishing Game을 통하여 알아보았습니다.
먼저 sight words를 짚어가며 읽어주고 챠트에 꽂은뒤...
T : We're going to fish for the sight words.
Throw the fishing pole into a pond and catch some fishes.
Did you caught?
Now, put the fish beside the same sight word and read that word.
* During Reading
1st Reading (Read Aloud)
: main contents words를 제시된 그림과 함께 짚어가며 읽어줍니다.
2nd Reading (Echo Reading)
: 단어를 꼼꼼이 짚어가며 따라 읽습니다.
3rd Reading (Choral Reading)
: 모두 함께 읽어봅니다.
* After Reading
1) Comprehension
: DRS 교재 안에는 이야기 구조에 따른 comprehension을 이끌수 있는 페이지가 있습니다.
Remembering the Story를 이용하여 story를 sequencing별로 다시한번 점검해 봤습니다.
I2) Initial Sound
: 교재의 마지막 부분에 배정이 되어 있어서 음가를 review하는 차원에서 다뤘습니다.
T : I'm going to show you some pictures.
카드를 보여줄께요.
Some of the pictures begin with sound /d/, other pictures do not.
어떤 것들은 /d/ 소리로 시작하고, 어떤것들은 그렇지 않아요.
Let's sort the pictures according to those that start with /d/ and those that start with
other sound.
/d/ 소리로 시작하는 것들과 다른 소리로 시작하는 것들로 나누어 봅시다.
* 마지막으로 Go Facts 에 관련된 부분을 읽었습니다.
Go Facts 수업을 하고 있는 아이들이여서... Go Facts를 random하게 수업을 진행할 수 없어서
효과적으로 연관 수업을 할 수는 없지만.
뒷단계의 reader라도 미리 보는것이 도움이 될 듯하여...
