Audrey Wood가 글을 쓰고, 그의 남편 Don Wood가 그림을 그린 동화책인데, 그림이 정말 대단하군요.
무척이나 정성을 들여서 그린 사진같은 사실적인 그림인데, 특히 표정 하나하나가 살아 있고, 눈동자와 속눈섭 하나까지도 소홀히 하지 않아 눈빛마져 살아있는 생생한 그림이 인상적이예요.
작가 Audrey Wood의 모습입니다.
제목인 Heckedy Peg는 이 이야기속에 등장하는 마녀의 이름이지요.
왜 작가가 이름을 이렇게 지었을까 궁금해서 여기저기 찾아 보았더니,
Heckedy라는 말은 없지만, Heck는 "Hell(지옥)의 완곡한 표현"이란 뜻이 있네요.
아마도 마녀의 이름이니 그런 의미를 포함하고 있을 것 같아요.
그리고 Peg는 "빨래집게"란 말이기도 하지만, "목발을 한(의족을 한)"이란 뜻도 있고, spoken English에선 "쓰러지다. 죽다. 힘이 다하다."란 뜻도 있으니, "아하! 역시" 란 생각이 드네요.
이야기속의 마녀는 한 쪽다리가 의족이고 나무 지팡이를 짚고 다니거든요.
그리고 결국엔 힘이 다해 죽게 되니까, 이름속에 이 모든 것이 암시되고 있다는 생각이 드네요.
제 생각이 맞는지는 모르겠지만.
그리고 이 이야기는 전래동화가 아니지만 "마치 전래동화같은(like a pure folktale)" story line과 deep and rich with folk wisdom( 속깊고 훌륭한 서민들의 슬기로움: 여기서는 주인공인 일곱아이들의 엄마의 슬기로움) 을 보여주면서, 마녀까지 등장하는 아이들에게 매력적인 이야기지요.
그 이유는 16세기부터 전해내려와 지금도 아이들이 즐기는 게임에서 영감을 얻어 이 이야기를 썼다고 하니 그럴수 밖에요.
전 초등학교 3학년 이상인 아이들과 함께 이책을 읽으며 주거니 받거니 재미있었답니다.
이 책을 척척 읽을 정도로 fluent reading이 되는 아이들은 아니지만, 독특하게 뮤지컬 형식으로 녹음되어있는 CD를 각자 집에서 많이 듣고 읽기연습을 충분히 하도록 하고, 수업을 할 때에는 Shared Reading과 Guided Reading을 많이 하면은 내용에 대한 이해도도 훨씬 높아지게 됩니다.그래서 다양한 방법으로 즐길 수가 있지요.
물론 우리말과 영어를 섞어가며 대화를 했지만, 아이들 혼자의 힘으로 안 되는 부분은 아이들이 우리말로 한 것을 선생님이 바로 영어로 고쳐 말해주고 따라하게 하는 것도 괜찮답니다.
영어로만 하라고 하면, 영어에만 신경쓰느라 자기의 생각을 다 말할 수 없어서 사고력이 확장되지 않을수 있으니까요.
먼저 아이들은 이야기속에 나오는 아이들이 이름이 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday란 사실을 너무 재미있어 하지요. 이미 다 알고 있는 단어들이니까. 그리고 아이들끼리 서로 친구의 이름을 바꾸어 부르며 즐거워 하지요.
예를 들면, 예원이는 Wednesday로, 소영이는 Sunday, 태경이는 Tuesday로 나름대로 비슷한 소리와 연결시켜 부르려 하더군요.

We use cardinal numbers when we count numbers of persons, animals or things.
사람이나 동물, 또는 물건의 숫자를 셀 때는 기수를 사용하지요.
Cardinal numbers are one, two, three, four, five...you've already known them.
기수란 하나, 둘, 셋, 넷, 다섯...이건데 여러분들은 이미 알고 있어요.
For example, one baby, two babies, three babies etc.

But we use ordinal numbers when we tell the order of somebody, or something.

*그리고 이야기가 긴 편이고 다양한 동사의 과거형이 많이 나와 있으므로 동사의 과거형을 정리해보며 Grammar를 Review 하기에도 좋습니다. 아이들이 아직 과거형 어미의 3가지 발음을 정확하게 구별하여 읽는 것을 어려워 하므로 이야기 속에 나온 동사를 가지고 분류하여 발음연습을 해봅니다.
