Balanced Literacy Approach

# What is reading?

*Reading is the process of constructing meaning through the dynamic interaction among the reader's existing knowledge.

*"Reading is the interaction among the author's writing and the reader¡®s experience or knowledge.

*The reader is an active, problem-solving individual who coordinates a number of skills and strategies to facilitate comprehension.

#What does a Balanced Literacy Approach Mean?

*Balanced Approach : phonics approach + whole language approach

*phonics approach: emphasizing sound-letter relationship.

*whole language approach: emphasizing immersion in language and literature

#Balanced Literacy

Balanced Literacy is a framework designed to help all students learn to read    and write effectively.

#The Literacy Collaborative Model

*It is a model for teaching children in a child-centered classroom, providing many opportunities for real life reading and writing experiences.

*Based on the research of Marie Clay, Irene Fountas, and Gay Su Pennell.

*Literacy Collaborative classrooms focus on 4 different types of reading experiences:

1.Reading aloud to children : using big books

2.Shared reading-whole class : using big books

3.Guided reading-small group :leveled reading, using leveled book, new book

every day, teaching a little, don't  teach whole

4.Independent reading : read by oneself-to become an independent reader

                                 *In Korean class: 1-3-2-4

Students also participate in writing activities each day.

The 4 types of writing experiences

1.Modeled writing-teacher

Shared writing-whole class (T&S together, using a shared pen)

2.Interactive writing- whole class - Guided writing

3.Writer's workshop- small groups or individuals.

4.Independent writing.

The goal of the Literacy Collaborative is to help children become readers and writers who enjoys and value literacy.

KEEP BOOKS help children to build their own home libraries and allow parents to share in their Literacy Experiences.
